Continuing the Halloween events, I went to the Night of 1,000 Jack O’Lanterns ($24) on Governor’s Island last weekend. The weather cooperated and was cool, but not rainy or too chilly. I went with my friend K for the 6:05 pm time slot. We took the ferry over from South St downtown and enjoyed a nice view of the sunset over the city. It was really breathtaking.
This was my first time on Gov’s Island (I know!) and I enjoyed the views. But when it came down to the pumpkins…. I was disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, they were carved pretty intricately, but it lacked the oomph and fantasy of the Great Blaze. These were single standalone carvings vs the towering displays we saw in Hudson. The carvings covered everything from pop culture to Disney princesses, military branches to music idols, and even had an “In Memory of” section for the icons who passed away this year. There are also several food stands on the island so you can grab a bite to eat. Just be warned that there will be a lot of walking as everything is spread out.
Overall I would say it’s good to go to if you want to also experience Gov’s Island. If you are looking for something a little more festive, then I would say to skip this and go to the Westbury counterpart or the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze.
