Late post.. but better late than never? Anyway.. As you all may or may not know, Halloween is my ULTIMATE favorite holiday EVER! Last year was my first year doing things AD (After Divorce) since the ex wasn’t a fan. This year I missed the jack o’lantern events, but I was able to dress up this year for more events. I had 3 costumes planned this year and was ready to go. Unfortunately I only have pictures of Beetlejuice and they aren’t that great. My photo ops didn’t go as well as I had planned, but I still enjoyed myself and that’s a win.
The Friday night before Halloween, GDubs and I stayed local and went to see Nailah Blackman perform. I wasn’t expecting many people to dress up, so I went more low key as a Pink Lady from Grease and just threw the jacket and scarf on with high waist jeans and red shoes. I aimed to be Rizzo-esque and I think it worked well. Red lips and basic makeup pulled it all together. Saturday night was the big night. We went to a Tim Burton themed party in the city and my costume fit in very well. I had been planning to be Beetlejuice for YEARS, but never got the time to make it work. This year was perfect. I didn’t want to do a “sexy” version, so I scouted out pieces to make the costume. I could have bought something pre-made, but I didn’t want a one time use polyester crap suit. I didn’t break the bank either and spent under $60 for the pants, jacket, tie, and wig. My pants and jacket didn’t match perfectly, but worked well enough. The suit I originally wanted went out of stock in my size.
The wig took a little bit of work because I bought a white “mad scientist” wig and painted it with spray hair dye. I mixed layers of lime green and grey to get it a moldy/dirty look. In hindsight I should have gotten more cans of spray to fully cover the wig, as some spots were still white. This is also something I should have given more time for it to air out and dry because the fumes from all the spray still bothered my nose and I did the wig 2 days before I wore it.
I was originally going to do full on Beetlejuice movie makeup, but after looking up a few different “glamour” Beetlejuice looks I decided to meet somewhere in the middle. I rushed it a bit as I was running behind schedule, but here’s a breakdown of what I used to do this:
Nut n Dates & Fez Up from Fenty Beauty Moroccan Spice palette
Hungover from Laura Lee Party Animal palette (I just found out about her drama so I will not be using this again)
L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara
Midnight Wasabi Mattemoiselle lipstick from Fenty Beauty
Exu from the Urban Decay x Jean-Michel Basquiat Tenant palette on my brows
an old lime green face paint for the ‘mold’ on my face and neck
Mehron Tooth FX in Nicotine
I was happy with the way it came out as Beetlejuice is supposed to be grubby and not perfect.
My last costume for Halloween day was Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I really wish I would have had pictures of this one. Next year I’m going to plan better and get someone to be my photographer!
Til the next time.
